visualization of the “Low Zacharias”, the cyclone that led to heavy flooding in southern Austria in august of 2023 (weather map from Ventusky, visualized in Touchdesigner)

following several sites of floodings in europe in the summer of 2023 with an infrared camera.  This year has been one of the worst in recent history with climate change and  poor flood management leading to  increased flooding damages all over europe.  These images accompany my bachelor’s thesis, which follows current trends of extreme precipitation in Southern Europe due to mediterranean (Vb-)cyclones. Similiar low pressure fields have a long history of causing flooding in southern to middle europe and are expected to increase in intensity due to an extreme warming in the mediterranean sea and unexpected changes in large weather patterns due to climate change. At the same time the mediterranean area gets dryer with extreme heatwaves devestating cultural landscapes. These images try to capture both the increased flaring up of atmosphere and the silent but everpresent effects after the flood.
